Agreement start: 1 July 2018
Agreement end: 30 June 2021
Licensees will be invoiced 3 months in advance of the anniversary date of their licence.
Unlimited site licence covering both teaching and research for ENVI Base and the Envi Modules bundle.
Institutions must make a three-year commitment from the date of joining this agreement.
Higher Education in the UK and the Republic of Ireland.
The community expressed an interest for Chest to negotiate an Agreement for ENVI with ITT Visual Information Solutions, later to become part of Exelis Inc and renamed Exelis Visual Information Solutions. Exelis is now part of Harris Geospatial Solutions UK Ltd.
Any changes to the Admin or Technical contacts must be passed to Harris and Chest as soon as possible, as support is only available to these nominated individuals. See 'Service and Support' tab for more information
Agreement not being renewed
Please note, this Agreement will come to an end 30 June 2021 and will not be renewed. L3Harris, the company behind ENVI, have made this decision for commercial reasons.
Any institution whose licence is due to end between 30 June 2021 and 30 June 2022 will therefore need to renew their licence directly with L3Harris if they wish to do so. L3Harris will be in touch to facilitate this.
Any institution whose licence is due to end after the 1 July 2022 will continue to be under Chest Terms and Conditions and be invoiced by Jisc for years two and/or three as appropriate. In this instance, it is only when their licence reaches full-term after three years that they will be required to renew directly with L3Harris.
If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact us, either help@chest.ac.uk or ben.offiler@chest.ac.uk.

ENVI
ENVI is the software of choice for processing and analysing geo-spatial imagery, combining advanced spectral imaging processing techniques with a modern, user-friendly interface. Whether you use panchromatic, LiDAR, SAR, multispectral or hyperspectral imagery, ENVI has the latest processing and analysis tools to help you extract meaningful information to make better decisions. More information can be found here.
ENVI Modules
Extend the functionality of ENVI with the ENVI Module Bundle which includes ENVI Feature Extraction, ENVI DEM Extraction, ENVI Atmospheric Correction and ENVI Photogrammetry. More information can be found here.
IDL
IDL is the programming language of choice for many Academics and Scientists because it’s easy to learn, easy to use, and requires fewer lines of code than other programming languages, making it easier and faster to go from data to discovery. IDL is the base product of ENVI allowing users to expand its capabilities. More information can be found here
SARscape
SARscape allows users to easily read, process, and output their SAR data so they can transform hard-to-interpret data into meaningful, contextual information. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data is a sophisticated data type that can be used to analyse an area of interest during the day or night, regardless of weather conditions. It is particularly helpful when trying to detect change and study the topography of a specific area. The products available through CHEST are SARscape Basic – InSAR and Interferometric Stacking (PB,SBAS), Windows and Linux only. More information can be found here.
Short-term Licence bundle
The Short-term Licence bundle is a one-year option offering 25 ENVI Licences and 25 ENVI Modules (including ENVI Feature Extraction, ENVI DEM Extraction, ENVI Atmospheric Correction and ENVI Photogrammetry).
A free 30 day single user evaluation copy of ENVI is available. Please email help@chest.ac.uk to set up
Full product documentation is available from Supplier's website, hosted at Harris Geospatial
The ENVI Pocket Guides are quick reference booklets - not intended to be read from cover to cover, but more as a point of reference. For those Users who wish to fully understand the capabilities of ENVI, and LiDAR, Harris Geospatial now offer online training courses [free] see the links below:

Self-paced online tutorial: Learn how to add easy-to-use SAR processing to your remote sensing applications
The use of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its many advantages such as its ability to capture data day or night and see through clouds. However, SAR data can be extremely complex and difficult to work with. ENVI® SARscape® has made the benefits of SAR data available to professionals across industries for many years. And now it’s gotten even easier!
ENVI now includes easy-to-use tools for some of the most common SAR processing applications – extending the benefits of SAR data to more users. These tools, ENVI SARscape Analytics, can be accessed in the ENVI toolbox and ENVI Modeler as well as ArcGIS Pro, and do not require you to be an expert in SAR to run them!
In this ten part course you will learn how to use the most requested analytics to support your Earth Observation applications with meaningful SAR products:
Each part in the series can be watched independently, however we recommend that you begin with part one for an introduction to the toolbox used throughout the course.
What is a Self-Paced Training?
Self-paced training courses are video tutorials that cover some of the same information you would receive in our in-person courses, and come complete with data and step-by-step instructions. They let you learn on your own time and at your own pace.
This course is available to anyone with a basic level of remote sensing knowledge and you don`t need to be an ENVI user to benefit. During the sign up process, trainees will be able to apply for a temporary software licence to complete the course.

Freely available Landsat 8 data via Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Please contact your ENVI Chest Agreement Licence Administrators to download the “LandSat-8 Query Extension tool” from the Harris website – once logged in click onto My Account> Extensions. This 3rd party plug-in allows an ENVI Chest Agreement Licence User unbridled access the Landsat 8 data to undertake analysis on the web, without the need to download the imagery data to their local machine, saving both time and expense.
Further details about the ENVI extension tool and AWS can be found on the Harris website.
Additional information can also be found on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) website:
AWS has made Landsat 8 data freely available on Amazon S3. All Landsat 8 scenes from 2015 are available along with a selection of cloud-free scenes from 2013 and 2014. New scenes are made available each day, often within hours of production. Learn more how to access over 400,000 Landsat 8 scenes on-demand without the need of storage here.
The Landsat program, launched on 11 February 2013, is the longest-running enterprise for acquisition of satellite imagery of Earth. Learn more about how Landsat data is used on NASA Landsat landing webpage.
